BIC's Committment to Conservation

Block Island Conservancy (BIC) is a non profit membership organization dedicated to maintaining habitats for animals and birds; protecting the natural beauty of Block Island; providing trails for walking, and quiet recreation; and protecting the island’s natural heritage, rural character, and public access to its resources.

The BIC mission is made possible through the generosity of its members.  Through member support, BIC is able continue its commitment to preserving land as open space through
acquisition or via conservation easements.

What is BIC currently doing to protect the island?

• Through mowing BIC protects view sheds.
• BIC maintains walking trails and open spaces for passive recreation.
• BIC continues to protect property all over Block Island.
• BIC sponsors a photo project where Block Island School middle school students take photographs of what they want to see on Block Island in 20 years. The finished projects are displayed at the Block Island School and Island Free Library. A calendar is also developed using these photographs.
• BIC contributes to environmental programs during the summer months for visitors.
• BIC contributes to the salary of a nature specialist who works with Block Island School students K-12. Students are able to get out of the classroom and go outside into the field to learn about the natural environment.
• BIC has contributed to the fight to protect the Great Salt Pond from the Champlin’s marina expansion.
• BIC is currently working towards Land Trust Alliance accreditation.
• BIC works to raise funds for future land acquisitions.

ConserFest partners with BIC to help them to achieve their mission by reaching a wider audience and cultivating a larger population of members and advocates to help in the effort to protect Block Island.

Why does ConserFest support Block Island Conservancy?

"Block Island Conservancy is the oldest environmental protection group on Block Island. It is a grass roots organization that has been working towards preserving the unique characteristics of the Island, which so many have grown to love. It is through contributions, large and small, from members and supporters, that the Block Island Conservancy is able to acquire land for a variety of uses. The Block Island Conservancy is dedicated to maintaining habitats for animals and birds; protecting the natural beauty of this Island; providing trails for walking, and quiet recreation; and protecting Block Island’s natural heritage, rural character, and public access to its resources. You can be a part of this effort and help preserve Block Island!

"More than 40% of the Island is preserved as open space in perpetuity; a legacy that will be passed to future generations. This achievement provides recreational areas, preserves scenic views, protects crucial habitats for rare plants and animals, and protects the natural recharging of the Island’s sole source aquifer, its only water supply.
