BIC's Committment to Conservation

Block Island Conservancy (BIC) is a non profit membership organization dedicated to maintaining habitats for animals and birds; protecting the natural beauty of Block Island; providing trails for walking, and quiet recreation; and protecting the island’s natural heritage, rural character, and public access to its resources.

The BIC mission is made possible through the generosity of its members. Through member support, BIC is able continue its commitment to preserving land as open space through
acquisition or via conservation easements.

What is BIC currently doing to protect the island?

Through mowing BIC protects view sheds.
BIC maintains walking trails and open spaces for passive recreation.
BIC continues to protect property all over Block Island.
BIC sponsors a photo project where Block Island School middle school students take photographs of what they want to see on Block Island in 20 years. The finished projects are displayed at the Block Island School and Island Free Library. A calendar is also developed using these photographs.
BIC contributes to environmental programs during the summer months for visitors.
BIC contributes to the salary of a nature specialist who works with Block Island School students K-12. Students are able to get out of the classroom and go outside into the field to learn about the natural environment.
BIC has contributed to the fight to protect the Great Salt Pond from the Champlin’s marina expansion.
BIC is currently working towards Land Trust Alliance accreditation.
BIC works to raise funds for future land acquisitions.

ConserFest partners with BIC to help them to achieve their mission by reaching a wider audience and cultivating a larger population of members and advocates to help in the effort to protect Block Island.

ANNOUNCEMENT: ConserFest Block Island 2009

ANNOUNCEMENT: ConserFest Block Island 2009 is slated for this summer on July 16th! This will be the one year anniversary for the big event. Previously unknown was the impact that it would have on the masses. Last year our awareness and fund raising efforts exceeded initial expectations, placing Block Island land conservation at the heart of the movement. The two-part event was open to the public and was constructed to support land conservation efforts through local and regional art, progressive small businesses and music. Among the bands and musicians featured on last year's agenda were regional artists Chachi, Homeslice, Trenton Street Rockers (TSR), Travis Greenlee and special guests Eli and Dan (of Zox.) This year's event line-up is currently in the works, but what is certain is that it will be yet another big conscious step in the direction of "a music movement for conservation awareness.” Be well.

History and Foundation

The ConserFest movement is a grass-roots project originating on Block Island, Rhode Island, in the fall of 2007. The efforts of organizations such as the Block Island Conservancy (BIC) are inspirational to the ConserFest founders, who recognize the importance and urgency of raising awareness for land conservation among younger generations. In turn, ConserFest aspires to further the efforts of the BIC and other like-minded organizations by educating the general public on the importance of conserving open space in beautiful places like Block Island.

Through a series of music and art events, ConserFest raises finances and awareness for land conservation as well as for the preservation of local heritage and culture. The proceeds of the festivals benefit the Block Island Conservancy and other non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental awareness. In the future, ConserFest intends to achieve non-profit status and continue its work with non-profit conservation groups.
